SmallBox Company (SMBX) provides local businesses with an innovative way to test their products or services on the market before committing to setting up a retail shop. "We have created affordable spaces by modifying shipping containers, turning them into semi-permanent commercial spaces, and renting them on a short-term basis to small business owners," its developers, Eric and Elizabeth Barbaree Tasker, say.
Local economies in the United States are driven by small entrepreneurs. "A major obstacle in the business models for many small companies is the transition to a traditional bricks and mortar shop." Their goal is to act as an intermediate step on this journey. "We provide a small, well designed, attractive space, that lets companies quickly and with less risk test the market and gain data on the viability of their products." Shipping containers represent an untapped resource, despite the fact that they are "a cost-effective, ready-to-be-repurposed construction material."
