Procolcacao was started in Bogota in 2011, thanks to the efforts of a team of people dedicated to the study and knowledge of the cultivation, harvesting, processing and marketing of cocoa in Colombia and throughout the world.
This organization sets up strategic alliances with different producers' associations all over the world and maintains working agreements to market top-quality and highly-regarded cocoa. Its ecosystem features producers' organizations in the departments of Santander, Arauca and –more recently– Cauca. In time the aim is to add producers from Cundinamarca, Boyacá and Sur de Bolívar, and ultimately to include the vast majority of Colombian cocoa producers. “In five years’ time we hope to be working with a total of 3,500 producers”, says the organization.
Procolcacao has started up solid export businesses to position the grain produced in Colombia in other premium markets. It is currently achieving success in the national cocoa market with its offering of an extra quality product. It has also succeeded in selecting buyers that recognize its premium quality and are willing to pay differential prices that operate in favor of the producer. It seeks differential prices in the foreign market as a way of improving the producers' quality of life and the technification of the processes after harvesting.
The producers’ associations belonging to Procolcacao receive regular advice on crop care and handling and post-harvest techniques –particularly in the fermentation and drying processes– to achieve superior qualities. The organization has created a system of continuous training that uses feedback from the producers' experience and the knowledge of Procolcacao technicians to support the organizations of allied producers.
