Makaia is a not-for-profit organization that promotes social development through cooperation, technology and innovation. To achieve this, they have two lines of work:
1- Technology for social change: designed to improve the living conditions of vulnerable individuals and communities, as well as the capacities of social organizations through the use and appropriation of technology, digital content and applications.
2- International cooperation and partnerships: to improve capacity for mobilizing national and international resources of social organizations and projects, including human, financial and information resources.
The organization's motivation is based on training as a way to open up better opportunities: "It is important for individuals and communities to use and appropriate technology in order to close social gaps and improve and increase access to education, employment, state services, information and opportunities provided by technology," explains executive director, Carlos González Penilla.
Makaia has launched the Nodoka platform (www.nodoka.co), which seeks to democratize access to cooperation information, thus enabling NGOs to access an international directory of possible allies (2,000 cooperators and 4,000 NGOs) and calls for cooperation (2,000). "In addition, the platform helps strengthen NGOs overall. It has a digital transformation diagnosis, specialized job exchange and a system for registering the beneficiaries of each organization." These functionalities make it a "repository of valuable information and data in the big data era."
