Huertos de Soria is a social enterprise dedicated to growing and selling products from its market garden using traditional and organic processes. In addition to its work promoting healthy eating and recovering plots for its crops, this company generates employment, in collaboration with FADES, for people at risk of exclusion.
“Our company is at the forefront of the social economy in the province, and links the territory with social inclusion as it recovers farmland that was previously unproductive, and uses traditional and organic farming for the crops”, explains Joaquín Alcalde, one of its managers. “It works like a normal company, and is economically sustainable and receives no government subsidies”.
Huertos de Soria's distinctive feature is that it encourages natural practices. This company holds an Organic Farming certification awarded by the regional government of Castile-León. Their greens and vegetables are grown like they used to be in the past. It is nature, and not chemical products, that rules and sets the rhythm of the crops.
Their production hub is in the municipality of Fuentepinilla in Soria, on a piece of land granted to the project by the Bravo-Pacheco family. “This land was no longer farmed after the father's death, and the children were keen for it to be used again, and even more so for a social project such as Huertos de Soria”, explains Joaquín.
This company is currently growing and positioning its brand as a byword for quality: “Huertos de Soria has succeeded in becoming a brand that is recognized by the public in Soria, both for its social aspect and the quality of its products”.
