Cerrando el Ciclo contributes to increasing the recycling of glass in Mexico by developing inclusive initiatives. Its aim is to transform collected glass bottles and empower women in vulnerable situations by making them entrepreneurs in the sector.
"Unlike PET, aluminum, cardboard and other waste, glass has no value in the market and is of little interest," explains its driver José Luis Pérez. According to SEMARNAT, more than 2.5 Mtoe of glass bottles are generated annually in Mexico, but only 12% is recycled.
Unlike other residues, glass has no value in the market (between 20c and 40c per kg), because of this, it is of no interest to society or recyclers to recycle it. "We encourage society to collect and recycle glass bottles to prevent them from being buried in landfills, scattered in streets, forests or seas." Its business model offers an alternative to turn women in vulnerable situation into entrepreneurs in the recycling sector, which is an activity that also benefits their community. As this company informs on its website: "Our team is made up of admirable women who, in addition to being single mothers, have become artisans of bottle recycling and actively participate with us to train other women and make them "Entrepreneurs in glass recycling".
